That's the best way I know to describe the 2009 corn crop. We have corn in the pollination stages and we have corn that was just planted recently.

I think you would have to go back a way in history to find three springs quite like 07, 08 and 09! What a roller coaster ride. Crop rotation is a practice that is old as time. Rotating crops builds the ground, helps with weed control and weed resistance, breaks disease cycles and also ADDS YIELD to the following crop.

The corn harvest of 2008 can best be described as "Variable". Some yields have been good while some have been off 15-20 bushels from last year's exceptional yields. Harvest season has been longer due to the extended planting season and harvest moistures were slow to drop out.

Water demand does slow down as the crop reaches the soft dough stage. Most of the production battle for corn is behind you, so max out kernel size and test weight by irrigating all the way to black layer.

Last year we had corn up. Temps were warm and conditions were excellent... until the Easter freeze. With winter rains delaying corn planting, we must be ready to roll when the opportunity comes.

For corn planting, look more at soil temperature instead of the calendar.
